Improving 1000 Cities, 1 Billion Lives by 2030
"Cities are where the climate battle will largely be won or lost." – António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General
Currently, 55% of the world’s population lives in cities, and this trend is expected to continue with 2.5 billion more urban residents by 2050. In light of this fact, our long-time partner the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), launched a call to action through its engagement platform World Urban Campaign (WUC) in a bid to improve 1000 Cities, 1 Billion Lives around the world by 2030.
1000 Cities, 1 Billion Lives is a concrete and inspirational target to generate a movement by engaging and promoting cities and urban operators that take action and impact people’s lives under the United Nations Decade of Action.
UN-Habitat’s WUC platform contributes to the UN Decade of Action, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 titled “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” through actions of UN-Habitat and its partners, including FIABCI.
A great example of such actions was the panel discussion 1000 Cities, 1 Billion Lives hosted by UN-Habitat at MIPIM Cannes with the aim to find solutions for urban resilience facing urban crises around the world. Together with ARCADIS, the National Housing Company from Saudi Arabia, and Prof. Carlos Moreno, who coined the urban planning concept 15-Minute City, FIABCI had the opportunity to discuss high-impact actions and the critical role of our sector.
