FIABCI-Taiwan’s Morning Talk Unfolds Secrets behind Early Warning Systems and Structural Analysis

Amid recent heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Myanmar and Thailand, FIABCI-Taiwan had its latest morning talk on a very timely theme: earthquake warning system and structural analysis for buildings.
Sanlien Technology has been one of the world’s leaders in these fields, and the chapter was very fortunate to have Sanlien’s president, Mr. Jim Lin, to speak on these topics during the event held at Palais de Chine Hotel in Taipei on April 9th.
With a network of sensors installed, seismic waves can be thoroughly monitored. Even though this might only provide us with early warnings that are 2 to 3 seconds ahead of time, this could potentially make a great difference in times of major earthquakes, allowing people the time to take necessary covers. This technology is particularly useful for countries located on seismic belts. Taiwan, for instance, has employed this technology for years.
Sensors can also be placed on different floors of a building to verify its structural condition. These sensors provide important data on determining whether structural damage has occurred each time a vibration occurs, either because of small earthquakes or strong winds. Structural engineers can also make use of this information to better decide whether a building is at risk in the aftermath of a seismic event.
Participants found this morning talk session extremely informative and of significant importance. While we mourn for the lives lost, we must understand how modern technology has been made available to us and how harm can in fact be minimalized with the right actions and measures. President Lily Chang concluded the event by encouraging chapter members to keep on sharing experience, expertise and good practices with fellow FIABCI chapters.
